  • Astrantia major subsp. involucrata 'Shaggy', also known as 'Margery Fish', is an elegant perennial distinguished by its large, star-shaped flowers with long, white bracts tipped with green. These blooms, resembling refined lace flowers, appear from late May to July and are held on sturdy, branched stems above a compact mound of deeply lobed, glossy green foliage. The plant reaches a height of approximately 75 to 90 cm and a spread of 45 to 60 cm.
'Shaggy' thrives in partial to full shade on moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. It is hardy down to -20°C and requires minimal maintenance. After flowering, cutting back the flower stems can encourage a second bloom and prevent self-seeding, as seedlings rarely come true to type. The plant is attractive to bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to natural gardens. It is suitable for borders, woodland edges, shady spots, and as a cut flower.
